Beth Orton - Trailer Park/Central Reservation
I bought these two off Amazon. These are Beth's first two albums and after listening to them I can understand why the title "Comedown Queen" is undisputedly hers. On 'Trailer PArk', her debut, she sings whole ehartedly in songs I don't fully understand the subject of. It's mostly quiet and acousticy (I know it's not a word but it works for my purpose), the songs just seem to drip off her tongue. With the more up tempo songs - How Far for example - shehas more percussion and backing vocals, but they never detract from her.
Let me help you understand why she is the "Comedown Queen". Most of the songs on Trailer Park start wih electronic sound effects that wind off into these slower melodic songs. If you've spen the night drinking copius amounts of spirits and ingesting illegal substances, you come home and this is the CD you would put o. It is exactly what you want. It's slower, softer, more tuneful but is still connected to the music you've been listening all night. That's comedown music. That's this album.
Central Reservation carries on with her trademark sound. Good rhythm behind, great vocals, brilliant lyrics. Except, this ofering is much more polished, more concise and consitstent than her debut. Personally I prefer this album. It's a small slught step away from Comedown and more towards Beth showcasing her vocal an songwriting skills. It's a taughter album, still retaiing it's easy-to-listen-to style but doing it better thanthe last time.
Beth's Englishness prevails through her songs. The fact that her voice isn't Americanised is very refreshing. Some have said that her voice is an acquired tast, I am more inclined to think that she is very accessible, with talent like hers it's almost unavoidable.
Overall, defintely worth the money howevr, out of the two, Central Reservation is defintely the stronger of the two. I can only hope that Daybreaker and The Comfort Of Strangers can compete.
